'Masked' (2023)

This work made up my Final Project in my 3rd year of university. It offers a conceptual representation of the lived experiences of women with autism, with a particular focus on ‘masking’ as a coping behaviour. Taking inspiration from my own and other’s experiences, my images visualise the struggle that comes with navigating the social world, and the subsequent actions that autistic women feel required to take in order to better fit society’s expectations. By combining faceless portraiture with landscape elements and abstraction techniques, the work conveys how these women hide their true selves in an attempt to conform and appear more “acceptable”.
